Summer 2021 Traffic Notices for Walloon Lake Area

They say in Michigan, that “road construction” is just one of our seasons – and this year is no exception. Those of you planning to visit us in Walloon Lake should make note of these area projects which may delay travel (and note the installation of a new traffic signal at US-131 and M-75 heading into the Village of Walloon Lake).

April 12-May 27, 2021: The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will invest $370,000 to install a new traffic signal at the intersection of US-131 and M-75 near Walloon Lake. This project includes new concrete curb and gutter, sidewalk connections with ramps meeting Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, and pavement markings. This work follows a project last year to install a high-friction surface on the southbound lanes of US-31 north of the north M-75 intersection, and on the northbound lanes of US-31 both north and south of the intersection. This work will require single-lane closures with traffic regulators and traffic shifts.

April 12-October 29, 2021: The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is investing $4.7 million to rebuild nearly 1.3 miles of US-131 from Cherry Hill Road to north of Thumb Lake Road in Boyne Falls. This project includes building new sidewalks, storm sewer, culverts, and curb and gutter. This work will require several different local detour routes as work proceeds:

  • During work on the US-131 northbound lane between Main Street and Thumb Lake Road, northbound traffic will detour on Main Street, Railroad Street, and Thumb Lake Road.
  • During work on the US-131 southbound lane south of M-75, southbound traffic will detour on M-75 and Boyne Mountain Road.
  • During work on M-75, traffic will detour on Boyne Mountain Road to US-131.
  • During work on Thumb Lake Road, traffic will detour on Springbrook Road and Skop Road.

April 5-October 30, 2021: A seven-mile stretch of U.S. 31 south of Charlevoix in Charlevoix County will be closed for a $13.3 million project that will rebuild the highway from Barnard/Norwood Road to Barnard/Old Norwood Road.
